SING IT, MARY
(Luke 1:46–55; 1 Samuel 2:1–11)
Joy That Can’t Stay Silent
Throughout Scripture, moments of deep joy are often sung, not merely spoken. Hannah sang when God met her in her barrenness. Mary sang when God met her in her lowliness. When hearts overflow, words alone seem insufficient. God has designed singing to shape us—uniting our bodies, our emotions, and our faith. Joy expressed in song doesn’t just reveal joy; it strengthens it.
Where do you see joy naturally spilling over into expression in your own life?
Why do you think God so often invites His people to sing rather than simply speak?
“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” — Luke 1:46–47
When Joy Feels Absent
But what about the seasons when there isn’t joy to give voice to? Mary’s song reminds us that joy isn’t rooted in ideal circumstances. Her praise flows from seeing who God is and how He works—lifting the lowly, humbling the proud, filling the hungry. God delights in great reversals, choosing what the world overlooks to display His glory. Joy grows when our vision shifts from ourselves to the surprising ways of God.
Where have you been tempted to look for joy in lesser things that cannot satisfy?
How might God be inviting you to see His work in places that feel small or unimpressive?
“God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise.” — 1 Corinthians 1:27
Looking to the Birth of Joy
Mary’s song echoes Hannah’s, and together they tell the story of the whole Bible: a mighty, holy God who shows mercy to the humble. True joy begins when we come honestly from our lowly condition and trust God to be our Savior. When joy feels distant, Advent invites us to look again—to the birth of Jesus Himself. He didn’t just bring joy; He is our joy. And one day, sorrow and sighing will flee, replaced by unending songs of gladness.
Where might Jesus be inviting you to rediscover joy this Advent season?
How can you proclaim His joy—through words, actions, or even song—to someone else this week?
“Sing a new song to the Lord… proclaim his salvation from day to day.” — Psalm 96:1–2
