THIS FAITH

Hebrews 11:1-40

1. Faith Looks to the Object of Our Faith

Hebrews 11 describes faith as the reality of what we hope for and the proof of what we do not see. But faith is only as strong as the one in whom we place it. Biblical faith is not confidence in our own ability to believe; it is belief and trust in God and his promises. The heroes of faith were not perfect people, but people who looked to God and trusted him.

  • Where are you tempted to put your confidence in your own faith rather than in the God who is faithful?
  • What promise of God do you need to trust today, even though you cannot yet see its fulfillment?

2. Faith Looks Forward to What God Has Promised

The people celebrated in Hebrews 11 faced uncertainty, suffering, and even death. Their lives were marked by faith, not perfection. They trusted God’s promises and looked forward to what he would accomplish, even when they did not see the full outcome in their lifetime. Faith enables us to live today in light of the future God has secured.

  • What present difficulty makes it hard for you to trust God’s promises?
  • How might an eternal perspective change the way you approach that difficulty?

Read: Hebrews 11:13–16

3. Faith Depends on God’s Grace, Not Our Goodness

Ephesians 2 reminds us that we were spiritually dead, unable to rescue ourselves. But God, rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ. We are saved by grace through faith—not because of our works, but because of what God has done for us. Faith does not save us because faith itself is powerful; faith brings us to the God who saves. And when our faith feels weak, we can ask him for help.

  • Are you relying on your own goodness or religious effort to make yourself right with God? How does the gospel redirect your confidence?
  • Where do you need to pray, “I believe; help my unbelief,” trusting God to sustain you?

Read: Ephesians 2:4–10
