ECCLESIASTES 10
This Sunday’s sermon opened with a surprising image: a million-dollar bottle of perfume—lavish, beautiful, and memorable. But as Ecclesiastes 10:1 warns, even the most exquisite fragrance can be ruined by a single fly. In the same way, a little foolishness can unravel much hard-earned wisdom. The message is clear: wisdom is fragile.
- What’s one “small” compromise you’ve justified that may be threatening something good in your life?
- Are you more focused on acquiring wisdom or protecting it?
- “Dead flies make a perfumer’s oil ferment and stink; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.” – Ecclesiastes 10:1
As we followed the Teacher’s reflections in Ecclesiastes 10, we saw how wisdom and folly show up in daily life—in how we respond to anger, how we speak, how we work, how we lead. In every area, even a little foolishness can have outsized consequences. The wise cultivate calm under pressure, speak carefully, and understand their limits. The fool, on the other hand, keeps talking, makes rash choices, and lacks direction.
- When have your words or reactions exposed foolishness rather than wisdom?
- In your work, relationships, or influence—what needs repair before it crumbles?
“Even a fool is considered wise when he keeps silent—discerning, when he seals his lips.” – Proverbs 17:28
This all sounds heavy—and it is. Left on our own, we all fall short. Hebrews reminds us that nothing is hidden from God’s sight. But into this sobering truth, the gospel shines. Jesus not only knows our foolishness, but has loved us through it. He invites us not just to adopt wise sayings, but to follow a coherent way of life—a better way, as Paul says. The way of love. Love for God and for neighbor, empowered by the love we’ve received at the cross.
- How is Jesus inviting you to love God and your neighbor more intentionally this week?
- Could wisdom for you right now look like slowing down to serve, listen, or share?
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart… Love your neighbor as yourself.’” – Matthew 22:37-39
Life Application: Let’s not settle for scattered soundbites of wisdom. Let’s follow the better way – Jesus Himself – and live with a wisdom rooted in love. Consider each decision or relationship currently stressing you and ask what the way of love calls you to in it.
For Prayer: Pray for the team being formed to work in Kampala this September with Cross Fellowship to share the gospel with college students. Pray about going yourself or how you can support others going if you are not able to.
